With Tanjavur yet to be graced by the railways, the common man faced transport problems every day of his working life. Sri T.V.SUNDRAM IYENGAR, the Founder of the TVS Group took the first step towards social care through honest business by initiating the bus service.

Many were the constraints that loomed large before Sri TVS Iyengar - roads as we understand them today, had not yet come into being - nearly all were country roads, uneven in the extreme, rendering bus rides most unpleasant. Wheels were made of wood - yes, wood, with rubber covering / coating. And the buses themselves ? They were chain driven and not geared- suspensions and shock absorbers were non existent.
A lesser entrepreneur would have turned tail and tried his acumen elsewhere - but visionary that he was, Sri TVS Iyengar came out with a typically comprehensive TVS package to surmount all of these: a team of mechanics would travel along with the buses, to cope instantly with problems as and when they would arise. Punctuality as a quality was insisted upon and became ingrained in all of the crew. A bus, upon reaching its destination would be serviced thoroughly before it could embark upon its next ' adventure'. Last but certainly not the least, providing food to the passengers was part of the deal ! With the deft, spontaneous touch of South Indian hospitality, Sri TVS Iyengar endeared himself to his entire clientele.
